The Lindbergh School District Foundation currently manages the funds and/or administers the selection process for eleven scholarships that are awarded to LHS seniors each year. This number includes the original LSDF General Scholarship that is awarded each year to the student who, based on his or her application essay, has overcome the most significant challenges and hardships during high school. The other ten scholarships have been established by or in the name of former administrators, teachers, coaches and alumni. In 2009, eleven students received a total of $12,000 in scholarships to help them further their education.
The advantages of creating a scholarship fund through LSDF or the LHS Alumni Association (a partner of LSDF) stem in part from the Lindbergh School District Foundation’s status as an independent, tax exempt, 501(c)3 organization. This means that all donations to any scholarship account are tax exempt. In addition, scholarship funds are carefully and conservatively invested in a wide variety of financial vehicles. LSDF’s Investment Policy Statement clarifies this further.
Funds for the LSDF General Scholarship Fund are raised through
- the sale of engraved bricks in the Lindbergh School District Spirit Garden and
- through donations of old clothing and shoes collected in the yellow Clothing Collection Boxes on the Lindbergh High School and Sperreng Middle School campuses and at a carwash owned by an LSDF Board Member
- direct donations from individuals and groups
